The AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring Course is a 1-day live course that will facilitate and enhance nurses' ability to interpret and respond to fetal heart rate patterns. Skills taught and knowledge assessed include: maternal and fetal physiology; interpretation of fetal and uterine monitor tracings; evaluation of auscultated fetal heart sounds; Leopold's Maneuvers; placement of fetal spiral electrodes and intrauterine pressure catheters; and evaluation of and strategies for enhancing communication among the multidisciplinary team. .
Objectives
- Analyze fetal heart rate patterns, uterine activity and the implications of each for fetal well-being.
- Demonstrate the psychomotor skills used in FHM
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of healthcare providers in the use of fetal heart monitoring (FHM) in intrapartum care.
- Discuss indicated clinical interventions and related maternal-fetal physiology.
- Effectively communicate verbal and written data about patient status.
