About this Module: The safety of every blood transfusion relies on positive patient identification, accurate documentation, and strict adherence to procedure at each of these steps in the process: Ordering the transfusion Collecting and labeling the pretransfusion sample Testing the pretransfusion sample Obtaining blood from the Transfusion Service Transporting blood to the patient care site Checking blood at the bedside Monitoring the patient during transfusion Completing the transfusion Responding to transfusion reaction signs & symptoms that develop during or shortly after transfusion show less
Objectives
- Correctly document the transfusion.
- Identify a patient with a transfusion reaction and state what steps to implement.
- Identify the correct IV fluid for blood administration.
- State the correct process for administering a unit of blood from start to finish.
- State the process to pick up blood components from the Transfusion Service.
