The course will provide clinical education, training, and competency assessment of skills, performed in the ambulatory setting, by incorporating current evidence-based science and best practice principles in the provision of direct patient care.

The didactic curriculum component will contain the following topics: Scope of Practice for the Medical Assistant, oxygen delivery and administration, ECG review, adult vital signs to include manual blood pressure, manual pulse, counting respirations and obtaining an accurate temperature, medication safety and administration, and emergency procedures to include use of the AED and use of emergency medications.

Skills assessment requirements will be validated at the end of the training to ensure the associates are performing clinical skills at the appropriate level of competency and utilizing effective interpersonal communication during interactions with patients. The following skills will be assessed for competence: adult manual blood pressure and pulse, counting respirations and obtaining an accurate temperature, ECG with chest/limb lead application, oxygen administration with NC, NRB, BVM and use of oxygen tank, safe medication administration, and types of injections- intradermal (ID), subcutaneous (SQ), intramuscular (IM). The training and assessment will be provided for emergency response and administration of emergency medications to include EpiPen.

A variety of teaching strategies (direct, indirect, independent, and interactive) in conjunction with simulation and learning technologies are employed to promote engagement and content retention. Associates will take a pre and post survey for knowledge assessment. Associates will also be given reference documents to supplement the learning curriculum. All associates will be evaluated and complete the competency stations. They will receive competency and training documents at the completion of the course.
