Description
Drs. Ferguson and Dorai will be joining us to review various surgical options for the cervical and lumbar spine, respectively.
Drs. Ferguson will be covering various conditions of the spine and the current concepts with treatment for these pathologies. He will review relevant anatomy of the cervical spine, cervical myelopathies, Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) versus Cervical Disc Replacement (CDR) and Posterior cervical fusion versus cervical laminoplasty.
Dr. Dorai will cover the lumbar spine and surgical considerations. She will review the anatomy of the lumbar spine and primarily focus on the following procedures: lumbar laminectomies, fusions and microdiscectomies. She will discuss surgical considerations and who is appropriate for these procedures.
Objectives
- Understand various spine pathologies and associated treatments with these pathologies be it surgical or non-operative.
- Compare/Contrast the pros and cons a MIS versus conventional surgeries.
- Verbalize the benefits of undergoing a MIS compared to a more open procedure.
- Synthesize the differences between cervical and lumbar pathologies and how the surgical approach may differ.

Speakers
Zeena Dorai, MD is the Chief of Neurosurgery, MedStar Good Samaritan and MedStar Union Memorial Hospitals; Director, Neurosciences, MedStar Health, Central Maryland Region; and an Associate Professor, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. She is board certified in neurological surgery and completed a board-certified fellowship in brain and spinal tumors. Her special clinical interests include degenerative spine disease, brain tumors, cranial trauma, hydrocephalus, and radiosurgery.
Dr. Dorai has authored articles and chapters in spine reconstruction, brain tumors and cerebrovascular surgery. She has given numerous local and national presentations and served as faculty for surgical courses at national neurosurgical meetings. Dr. Dorai is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. Dorai was named a 2021 "Top Doc" by Baltimore Magazine for Neurosurgery and also recognized in 2015-2020.
Joseph Ferguson, MD is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in spinal surgery. He specializes in Cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back) and lumbar (lower-back) pathologies, minimally invasive techniques
Lumbar stenosis, Lumbar degenerative spine disorders, Cervical Stenosis, Cervical herniated disks
Neck and/or arm pain or weakness, Leg pain and weakness, Cervical radiculopathy and myelopathy
Scoliosis (adult), and Surgery: spinal, minimally invasive, microscopic, motion-sparing.
Dr. Ferguson believes each patient is unique and requires an individualized, focused, and thorough treatment approach to address the diagnosis. He approaches each patient-physician relationship as a partnership, with the best outcomes resulting from a collaborative effort. His goal is to help patients and their families understand their conditions and to educate them on all possible options, in order to restore function and relieve pain for a return to an active lifestyle.
