Objectives

  • Create a systematic, focused list of differential diagnoses and the appropriate interventions for a deteriorating LVAD patient utilizing VAD parameters.
  • Decide appropriately when and how to escalate care and/or activate the Rapid Response Team.
  • Identify signs, symptoms, and LVAD device findings that indicate a stable patient.
  • Identify signs, symptoms, and LVAD device findings that indicate an unstable patient.
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care of LVAD patients.
  • Integrate a team-based approach in the care of LVAD patients.
  • Perform an appropriate, focused physical exam and identify pertinent positives and negatives of the LVAD-focused physical exam.
  • Select the appropriate diagnostic tests to evaluate an unstable LVAD patient and correctly interpret the diagnostic test results.
