About this Course: The Glycemic Management in the Hospital course is designed to help clinicians effectively manage the hospitalized patient with diabetes with the goal of decreasing morbidity, mortality, length of stay and improving patient outcomes. Pre, peri and post operative management will also be addressed, as well as how to prepare the person with diabetes for safe discharge from the hospital. This course helps to meet the DC Key Health Priorities: (Pharmacology/Nutrition 1.0 CE)

- Apply the standardized subcutaneous insulin protocol including the use of prandial, correction and basal insulin.
- Identify the hallmark features of DKA that differentiates it from HHS.
- Identify three major complications of DKA and HHS.
- Integrate a team-based approach in the care of persons with diabetes in the hospital.
- Recognize hyperglycemic emergencies and safely manage patients to achieve euglycemia.
- Utilize appropriate insulin therapy to achieve a blood glucose target of 140 with the range of 110-180mg/dl considered acceptable for hospitalized patients.
