This course offers 0.50 Continuing Professional Education credits. To claim the credits, the course must be completed prior to Termination 12/21/2025. At the completion of this course, the ED nurse will be able to use the nursing process to develop and deliver a nursing plan of care for the pediatric patient with viral respiratory illness with a prolonged ER stay.

- Choose the appropriate respiratory adjuncts (bulb suction, low flow wall oxygen, heated high flow, intubation) based on the respiratory assessment.
- Develop and deliver a care plan that includes consideration of nutrition and intake and output.
- Implement patient and family teaching on the plan of care including the rationale and utility of respiratory equipment such as heated high flow and NIPPV.
- Implement patient/family education including regarding supportive care for viral illness, medications, preventative care.
- Perform a focused respiratory assessment and identify signs and symptoms of increased work of breathing and respiratory distress and failure.
- Respond and intervene to provide supportive care and relieve work of breathing.
- Utilize the ongoing assessment to support the interdisciplinary team with weaning patients from oxygen support.
