Moistening and removing gross soil at point of use can help prevent organic material and debris from drying on instruments (AORN, 2022). Organic material and debris are more difficult to remove from surgical instruments when they are allowed to dry, and residual soil can affect the efficacy of subsequent disinfection and sterilization processes. This module will review the importance of point of use instrument cleaning, as well as standard practices to prevent the buildup of soil and biofilm on instruments.
