About this Course: The MWHC NICU Refresher Class is a clinical and didactic refresher course for new-to-specialty NICU nurses. Though all NICU nurses can take the class, the class targets nurses within the first 6- to 12-months of independent practice.

- Care of the patient with a pneumothorax
- High-risk deliveries and the Golden Hour
- High-risk medication administration
- Umbilical arterial line management
Objectives
- Demonstrate indications, contraindications, nursing interventions, appropriate use, and handling of umbilical arterial catheters
- Describe drug classes, and appropriate routes and safe administration of high-risk medications used in the perinatal setting
- Describe the process of air leak evacuation
- Describe the significance and goals for the golden hour for high-risk newborns
- Identify appropriate evidence-based medical and nursing interventions to maximize outcomes during the golden hour and beyond
- Identify the roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team involved in the collaborative care of patients with complex care management needs
- Integrate a team-based approach in the care of patients with complex care management needs
- Verbalize indications for chest tube insertion, and the care for the patient with a chest tube, including chest tube and Pleuravac management
