This workshop is targeted to experienced Emergency Department (ED) nurses who want to improve their skills in coaching and successfully on-boarding new staff to the fast-paced Emergency Department environment. The course will provide the nurse with the tools needed to become a successful clinical coach. The coach will learn how to orient nurses new to the ED by utilizing effective teaching strategies, learning how to provide timely and constructive feedback, while ensuring patient safety and completion of the required documentation. Orientation paperwork is reviewed to include weekly guidelines for the orientee’s progress, midpoint & final evaluations, and the paperwork to be completed by coaches during orientation. Teaching strategies utilized include discussion, case studies, and question and answer forum. Tips for having crucial conversations and the keys to providing open and timely feedback are reviewed. Prevention of lateral violence in the ED is also discussed.
