This 8-hour course has been divided into sections, morning section A and afternoon section B. Content will provide learners with information related to MWHC Baby Friendly journey. Topics covered in this class include: the BFHI global strategy, milk transfer, promoting breastfeeding during pregnancy, infants and mothers with special needs, protecting breastfeeding, breast and nipple concerns, on-going support for mothers and communication skills.

- •Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively about breastfeeding.
- •Describe essential components of support for mothers to continue breastfeeding beyond the early weeks.
- •Describe strategies that protect breastfeeding as a public health goal.
- •Describe the anatomy and physiology of lacation and the process of breastfeeding.
- •Discuss contraindications to breastfeeding in the United States as well as commonly encountered areas of concern for breastfeeding mothers and their babies.
- •Discuss methods that may increase milk production in a variety of circumstances.
- •Discuss the rationale for professional, government, and international policies that promote, protect and support breastfeeding in the United States.
- •Identify teaching points appropriate for prenatal classes and in interactions with pregnant women.
- •Prepare and support a mother for discharge; follow-up and support after discharge; and assist mother to sustain continued breastfeeding.
