This MedStar Health on line education, “The Deteriorating Patient Condition” was developed in response to nursing peer review showing lack of identification of the deteriorating patient and failure to rescue. Rapid lowering of blood pressure and/or use of IV antihypertensive agents has been identified as a safety risk for patients in the ED and inpatient settings. MedStar has established new guidelines for the safe management of markedly elevated blood pressure in adult patients presenting to the emergency department and inpatient settings. The improper wasting of controlled substances is one of the most common ways to divert drugs. When a medication dosage contains more than the amount ordered, a nurse or anesthesiologist is required to waste the remaining medication in the cactus sink, with a documented witness present.
